Course description |
Based on elementary grammar and reading, this course is designed to develop a higher level of proficiency in translation or written communication. Emphasis is on intercultural Understanding in German. This course is offered to advance students' intercultural understanding applying the knowledge and skills acquired in German I and II. |

Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to: 1. read and write high level German text with the aid of a dictionary. 2. understand and explain German culture. Week 1: Course guidance, expression practice Week 2: Review of grammar, expression practice, conversation practice, reading Weeks 3 to 13: Expression practice, conversation practice, reading Week 3: Wien ist anders: Introduction. Week 4: Kapitel 1 Auf dem Stephansturm: Present perfect, 3 basic verbal forms, comparison Week 5: Kapitel 2 Es ist kompliziert: Number, declension of adjectives Week 6: Kapitel 3 Das isst man in Wien wirklich: Date expressions, passive voice Week 7: Kapitel 4 Die Hauptstadt der Musik? Calendar months, 'das' & 'dass'. Week 8: Kapitel 5 Gehen wir einkaufen! Subordinating conjunctions and subordinate clauses. Week 9: Kapitel 6 Ausfluge ins Gruene. Numerals, subjunctive II. Week10: Kapitel 7 Skifahren ist wunderbar! Prefixes and suffixes, present perfect. Week11: Kapitel 8 Unser Zug: Subjunctive I and II. Week12: Kapitel 9 Ein echter Wiener: Past perfect, relative pronouns Week13: Kapitel 10 In Wien ist die Welt zu Hause: Simple past tense. Prerequisites |
Students are requested to take "German Ⅰ・Ⅱ" . Text of grammar and dictionary are needed. Students are recommended to spend 45 minutes in preparing for each class, and another 45 minutes in completing assignments and revising the class. |

Assessment/Grading |
Exam (60%):to assess reading and translation ability based on basic grammar from German I and II, as well as intermediate grammar from this course. Class participation (40%): Class attendance and communication expression ability making sentences parallel to the class materials is evaluated. |
