Course description
Students will learn the basic vocabulary and grammar and the basic communicative skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) of Spanish. Toward this goal, students need to take both “Spanish I” and “Spanish II” in the same year.

This course is offered as the first part of the two-part Spanish language course of the Global Language and Cultural Studies.
Expected Learning
Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to:
1. have basic conversations concerning daily life.
2. read and write elementary sentences based on the solid lexical and grammatical knowledge of Spanish.
3. have deeper knowledge of the Spanish language and the Hispanic world.

Course schedule
Week 1 Lesson 8: Indirect object pronouns, Verb “tener”.
Week 2 Lesson 8: Present indicative of root-changing verbs (e→ie type). Conversation on preparation of a party.
Week 3 Lesson 9: Present indicative of root-changing verbs (o→ue type & e→i type).
Week 4 Lesson 9: Indefinite and negative words. Text-messaging.
Week 5 Lesson 10: Verbs “ir, venir, decir, & oir”.
Week 6 Lesson 10: Possessives. Plannning of a trip.
Week 7 Lesson 8-10 Mini quiz. Lesson 11: Verb “gustar”.
Week 8 Lesson 11: Comparatives. Conversation about hobbies.
Week 9 Lesson 12: Reflexive verbs.
Week 10 Lesson 12: Usage of reflexive verbs. Conversation on habits and physical condition.
Week 11 Lesson 11-12 Mini quiz. Lesson 13: Past participle, Present perfect.
Week 12 Lesson 13: Present particple. Conversation on experience.
Week 13 Lesson 14: Preterite indicative. Biography.
Week 14 Lesson 15: Imperfect indicative. Remembrance.
Week 15 Wrap-up and Final exam.
Prerequisites
It is desirable to take the classes of “Spanish II” and “Spanish for Intercultural Understsanding” to acquire comprehensively the basic skill of the language.
Students are recommended to spend 45 minutes in preparing for each class, and another 45 minutes in completing assignments and revising the class.

Final exam 70%
Class participation and results of quizzes 30%
Students absent more than five times are not qualified to take the final exam.
