Course description
In Medicinal Chemistry course, you will learn about fundamental synthetic methods of drugs and their mode of actions, and computer-assisted drug design strategy. This course aims to understand drugs from the viewpoint of reactivity of organic compounds (drugs) with proteins and nucleic acids.
In this course, synthesis and reaction of carbonyl compounds (aldehydes, ketones), which are frequently used for the synthesis of drugs, are addressed. In addition, we will introduce the latest technique on computer-assisted drug design. We also will address sugars, amino acids, and nucleic acids for understanding the mode of actions of medicines. In each lecture, home work is assigned which is related to the contents of the lecture. Through this course, you will learn about the electron arrows to understand the reaction.
Expected Learning
1) Understand the synthetic methods of some drugs based upon the reactions of carbonyl compounds.
2) Understand the computer-assisted drug design strategies.
3) Understand the chemical structures and reactivity of carbohydrates, nucleic acids and amino acids.

This subject corresponds to the viewpoint A of the diploma policy.

This lecture is a series of chemistry courses, following "Basic Chemistry", "Organic Chemistry in Life Science I" and "Organic Chemistry in Life Science II". You are encouraged to take those lectures for the “Medicinal Chemistry”.
Required Text(s) and Materials
Wade Organic Chemistry (Maruzen) and Supplementary materials.
References
Some texts and Books will be introduced in the course.
Assessment/Grading
Evaluation will be made based on the results of the report (30%) and the final exam (70%).
Message from instructor(s)
Why do drugs work? Understanding of the mode of actions of drugs will lead the new discovery of another drugs. You will learn the mechanism and design strategy with molecular level. I will check and return the submitted home-work with some comments, especially focusing on the electron arrow. Please review carefully and use these occasions for understanding the contents in the course.
