Course description

Electromagnetic wave propagation and light propagation in optical waveguide will be given for students who will work in the research and development related to light and radio wave in the future. Numerical analysis and some experimental demonstrations about the reflection, refraction, and polarization of light will be given for better understanding for students who will work in various field. Furthermore, state of the art topics including new material will be given.
Expected Learning
Able to understand the electromagnetic wave propagation.
Able to learn the fundamental theory of light propagation.
Course schedule
1st: Background of Electromagnetic Wave Engineering
2nd: Derivation of wave equation based on Maxwell equations
3rd: Plane wave.
4th- 5th: Reflection, refraction and polarization of plane wave with numerical analysis.
6th-7th: Total reflection, Brewster angle, with numerical analysis.
8th- 10th: Fundamental of transmission line. Lumped parameter circuit and distributed parameter circuit.
11th-12th: Light propagation in optical fiber based on slab waveguide.Concept of mode, and dispersion.
13th- 14 th: Review of optical sensors as a recent research topic.
15th: End term examination.
