| Course description |
| When dealing with information, it is essential to understand language and society. Since people use computers, electronic technology, and information technologies through natural language, engineers and researchers in these fields should have fundamental knowledge about human language. Therefore, this course deals with important properties of natural language and some aspects of linguistic theories so that students majoring in EECS will have basic knowledge about natural languages and language faculty of human beings. |
| Expected Learning |

Students taking this course are expected to: 1. understand characteristics of world languages, the history of modern linguistics, and the basic ideas and methods of subfields of linguistics, 2. understand the main theories of linguistic relativity. 3. understand typological characteristics of the Japanese language 4. understand characteristics of natural language from cognitive scientific point of view. 5. understand basics of research ethics, and know how to behave as participants in experiments. Linguistic relativity [1]: Sapir=Worf Hypothesis, language and thought 6. Linguistic relativity [2]: experimental studies (Levinson's studies, spatial cognition) 7. Wrap up of the first half. 8.
