Course description |
Fiber-reinforced composite materials, plastics(polymers), rubbers, and adhesives are widely utilized for various kinds of mechanical systems such as aircrafts, rockets, satellites, automobiles and robots. This lecture provides the materials, processing, mechanical properties, and fundamental mechanics of fiber-reinforced composite materials. The case-study for applying the aircraft composite structures is also explained. Furthermore, the chemical structures, processing, thermal and mechanical properties, time-dependent mechanical behaviors of polymers are explained. |
Expected Learning |
1) To understand the characteristics and capability of composite materials, polymers for mechanical engineering as compared with metallic materials such as steel, Aluminum alloys, Titanium alloys and Nickel-based super alloys. 2) To understand the terminology, characteristics, processing, mechanical property of fibers, micro-mechanics, constituent equations, lamina / lamination theory, failure and damage behavior of fiber reinforced composite materials. 3) To understand the terminology, variety and chemical structures, processing, thermal and mechanical properties, constituent equations, visco-elastic behaviors of polymers. |
Course schedule |
Topical themes of each class are as follows; (1) Engineering applications of fiber-reinforced composite materials and polymers in mechanical systems (2) Introduction to polymers (processing and properties) (3) Introduction to carbon and glass fibers (materials, processing, and mechanics) (4) Introduction to molding technology of polymer and fiber-reinforced composites (5)-(10) Fiber-reinforced composite materials (micro-mechanics, constituent equation, lamina / lamination theory, failure and damage behavior, sandwich structure, stiffened panel structures, aircraft structures) (11)-(14) Polymer materials (chemical structures, processing, thermal and mechanical properties, time-dependent mechanical behaviors) (15) Case study of structural design of aerospace systems such as aircraft, rocket, and satellite using composite materials and polymers |
