Course description
The purpose of this course is to understand agricultural production and its related social conditions as well as the characteristics of agriculture which is based on the relationship with "living organisms." Given these understandings, we proceed with discussion on sustainable agriculture from multiple perspectives. A student is requested to acquire necessary knowledge and foster its application skills.
In the class, first we explore the ideal forms and features of agriculture required for the society of the next generation. Second, we introduce the general situations and specific examples of global and Japanese agriculture as well as agricultural and rural issues therein, followed by the discussion on the directions toward solving these issues.
Expected Learning
To gain knowledge necessary for inquiry into sustainable agriculture from multiple perspectives on as well as its application skills.

Course schedule
Despite the spread of the new coronavirus infectious disease, COVID-19, this course will be conducted through face-to-face in class since the expected number of enrollments is small. However, depending on the number of enrollment and other factors, classes may be offered online. Please check the change in schedules in the Google Classroom for this subject.

In the class, the relationship between the SDGs advocated by the United Nations and Society 5.0 proposed by the Japanese government and agriculture and rural areas will be explored, and then agriculture required for the next generation will be discussed. Next, we will explain various issues of agriculture and rural areas in the world and Japan, and explore the direction toward solving these issues referring to the general situations and some examples in specific contexts.

4. Direction of next-generation agriculture from a management perspective

Prerequisites
In addition to 15 hours that students spend in the class, students are recommended to prepare for and review the lectures, spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University, using the materials as well as the references specified below.
