Course description
A number of elements such as C, H, O, N, P, S not only consists of body of organisms but are the constituents of the atmosphere. Biogeochemical cycle of these elements realizes the earth's environment, while its alteration results in various environmental problems. This course learns such a relationship between biogeochemical cycles and environmental issues, and how such a biogeochemical cycling is characterized.

Course schedule
Specifically, the following contents are planned.

[Yoh] (5 lectures in October)

Firstly, a lecture will be delivered, which is on "The characteristics of nitrogen biogeochemical cycling".
In the next 4 times, students are requested to deliver a lecture and make a discussion on the following topics.

-The behavior of P and its characteristics in terrestrial environments.
-C cycling in terrestrial environments
-C cycling in marine environments
-O cycling on the earth
-Biogeochemical cycling in the ocean
-Problem of global warming
-Formation, succession and transition of ecosystems
-Development of soil and chemical characteristics
-Cycling of C, N, P and Fe in the soil horizons
-Why doesn't the earth come to a burning world as in Venus?

[Umezawa] (5 lectures in November)
The basics of stable isotope ratio, an essential tool for understanding biogeochemical cycles in the biosphere, will be lectured introducing the application studies in the field of ecology, hydrology and environmental sciences.

[Watanabe] (5 lectures in December and January)
Give presentations on environmental chemistry and discuss with everyone. Set the theme (type and number of times) according to the number of students every year. Therefore, the contents will be explained at the first lecture (the first time in October).
