Course description |
Specialized and advanced studies will be introduced in this course with relevance to materials engineering to enhance tha ability in understanding and analyzing the fundamental mechanisms of materials behavior of mainly metals and alloys. |
Expected Learning |
This course aims to help the graduate students in the materials engineering laboratory study self-consistently about the principles in making researches on materials characterization and mechanical property through the following abilities. 1) capability in explaining the materials characters based on their structure and chemical bonding 2) capability in experimantal measurement on mechanical propertis of the engineering materials 3) capability in applying a proper thermal/mechanical processing on metallic alloys 4) capability in making detailed analysis upon the mechanisms of matrials behavior |
Course schedule |
Seminars and colloquia will be given on topics as follows (1) materials science and engineering (2) mechanical responses of solid materials, stress-strain relationship (3) elasticity, plasticity and toughness of materials (4) dislocation theory of plastic deformation and strengthening mechanisms (5) constitutive laws governing the yield strength of metals and alloys (6) temperature-, stress-, and strain rate- dependence of flow stresses (7) diffusion-controlled processes in materials (8) diffusionless transformations: athermal martensite and thermoelastic martensite (9) deformation mechanism maps and material property charts (10) materials selection rules and materials optimization (11) microstructural evolution and control during thermal and mechanical processing (12) structure-property-process-performance interrelationship (13) thermodynamic aspect of phase equilibria, phase constitution and phase reactions (14) practical alloys in particular (15) creep and fatigue of structural materials in serivice |
