[This course is offered for the International Specialized Program.] This course deals with important properties of natural language and some aspects of linguistic theories so that students majoring in engineering can develop basic understanding of the structures and functions of natural languages and language faculty of human beings, thereby obtaining deeper understanding of how communication is being achieved through language. |

Students taking this course are expected to: 1. understand characteristics of human language compared with other communication systems, 2. understand the history of modern linguistics, 3. know the basic ideas and methods of subfields of linguistics, 4. learn how to analyze linguistic data. | Prerequisites |

To fully participate in this course, basic English skills enough to understand the lectures and to take notes are required. In addition to 30 hours for lectures, students are recommended to study 15 hours in total, e.g., for preparation and review. This is the standard amount of time as specified by the University. |

Participation and contribution to the class: 40% Examination scores : 60% The final exam will asses the students' level of understanding and knowledge of: 1. characteristics of the Japanese language compared with other languages, 2. the history of modern linguistics, 3. the basic ideas and methods of subfields of linguistics, 4. how to analyze linguistic data. ====== This plan is subject to amendment because of the change due to COVID-19. Short tests scores will be evaluated instead of examination scores. |
