Course description |
This course discusses (A) the preparation of extraordinarily thin (0.3 - 0.4 nm) organic films on clean solid surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum, (B) the in-situ electronic and geometric structures analyses of the films, and (C) the creation of subnanomaterials with high regularity by introducing new chemical bonds among the molecules. |
Expected Learning |
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to comprehend conditions indispensable for the preparation of extrathin films, understand the backgrounds of characterization techniques, read through original papers on this field, and extract fundamental information on the microscopic structures from experimental data. |
Course schedule |
Part 1 What are organic extrathin films? (1) Lecture (L) (2.5 weeks) (students will be called on to answer questions) Definition and significance; Wet films and dry films; Clean solid surfaces and ultrahigh vacuum; Choice of molecules and the substrate; Control of layer number and molecular aggregation; Apparatus for film preparation and in-situ characterization. Part 2 Surface analysis techniques and examples of studies (2) L (0.5 week) + literature introduction by students (LI) (1.5 weeks) Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (3) L (0.5 week) + LI (1.5 weeks) Metastable atom electron spectroscopy (4) L (0.5 week) + LI (1.5 weeks) Scanning tunneling microcopy (5) L (0.5 week) + LI (1.5 weeks) Infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (6) L (0.5 week) + LI (1.5 weeks) Electron diffraction Part 3 Creation of subnanomaterials with well-defined structures (7) L (0.5 week) + LI (1.5 weeks) How to introduce new chemical bonds. (8) Exercise (0.5 week) |
Prerequisites |
Ability to earn the credits of quantum chemistry I・II and structural chemistry offered for the undergraduate students of organic and polymer materials chemistry (or similar courses) is necessary. Those who want to take this course should be present at the opening of the class, when each student is assigned to a characterization technique for LI. |
Required Text(s) and Materials |

Assessment/Grading |
Quality of LI (40 %); Participation in discussion (40 %); Exercise (20 %). |
Message from instructor(s) |
For the creation of (sub)nanomaterials, it is of fundamental importance to elucidate the electronic and geometric structures. Those who recognize the point and are willing to read through fundamental research articles will be welcomed. |
