Course description |
More than 1.2 million species of arthropods have been described so far, and this number accounts for more than 80% of the total animal species. The largest group of arthropods is insects (>1.08 million species), followed by mites and ticks (>55,000 species). This 1-credit course utilizes lectures to learn the sophisticated physiological functions of these animals that have prospered on Earth, and learn about pest management in agriculture, their utilization as food and applications to industrial products. |
Expected Learning |
To understand basic physiological functions of insects and mites, and mode of action of pesticides. |
Course schedule |
1) Insect physiology (1) 2) Insect physiology (2) 3) Pesticides: History and next-generation Technologies 4) Use of insect functions 5) General acarology 6) Advanced acarology 7) Summary Exam |
Prerequisites |
Completion of basic biology courses at an undergraduate level and Advanced Production and Utilization Systems of Biomass I is required. In addition to 15 hours in the class, students are recommended to prepare for and review the classes by referring to handouts and reference books in accordance with the standard amount of time as specified by the University. |
