Course description
Mondays from October, 2021 to Feb 2022.
10:30~12:00 Subject to change due to Covid-19 situation.
※Online lecture will be provided in October , then changed to a face to face class from November.

This class will focus on oral communications in science/engineering discipline. After ice-braking session, we’ll learn some basic terms and expressions in English that is essential needs for scientific communications. These sessions also covers some basic vocabulary.
Then, group work will pick up an basic “experiment” and each group prepare for the instructors note in English. Some of the group member will play an instructor’s roll to do the experiment.
The other topic in this course covers individual research (or research plan) presentation including Q&A session.
Beside the class work, we may have chance to visit JICA Tsukuba’s Agriculture research trainees for exchange session. (This may announced at the first session of this class.)

Web based class or Class on the net may cause an alternation of above mentioned target setting. That fully depends on the Covid-19 situation at Utsunomiya U.
Expected Learning
Students will improve their English proficiency in terms of scientific/engineering communication.
Including, vocabulary building in daily research work in a Laboratory, oral presentation skills and preparations on research topic.
Course schedule
1 Orientation and Ice breaking
2、3、4 Lectures and group work practice on general science communication.
5、6、7、8 Pick up a simple “experiment” as an example, and prepare for an instructions in English. Then one group instruct the class to carry out the “experiment”. (group project)
9、10、11.12 Prepare for a 15 min oral presentation on individual research plan with abstract, visual aid (ppt. slides), scripts. In the preparation, class may share the progress of preparation.
13、14、15 Oral presentation (15 minutes) with Q&A sessions.
Class may have chance to visit JICA Tsukuba for exchange session with JICA’s agriculture research trainees in November. (This may need some additional arrangements and detailed schedule be announced at the Orientation)

We may need to change class schedule due to the Covid-19 situation at Utsunomiya University. If that is the case, you’ll be informed at class #1 orientation.

No prerequisites set for this class. TOEIC score or other English proficiency test score might be asked for class management purposes.

Class participation including Group-work has the core in this class.
No exam.
