Course description |
July, 1, 2021 (Thu) 10:30 - “Water use and fish habitat conservation in rivers and canals” This is a lecture course to acquire a high degree of specialized ability in the field of agricultural environmental engineering by learning the latest knowledge and technology in agriculture. Students will learn about water use and conservation of fish habitat in rivers and canals through classroom lectures and numerical analysis using computers. With examples in Shiga and Ibaraki Prefectures, lectures are given on water withdrawal from a river for agriculture and hydroelectric power generation and hydraulic environment affecting fish habitat in a river and a canal. Simulation and prediction of stream flow are conducted by a two-dimensional flow model. The course will be held online on July, 1st, 3rd year of Reiwa. |
Expected Learning |
1.Understanding water use in agricultural lands and watershed 2.Understanding a method of numerical analysis on stream flow in rivers and canals |
Course schedule |
1.Use of river water and fish habitat 2.Fish habitat in canals 3.Evaluation method of fish habitat 4.Numerical analysis of stream flow |
Prerequisites |
Please bring your lap-top PC (Windows OS) and PC mouse. PC mouse is necessary to use the software of numerical analysis efficiently. |

Assessment/Grading |
Understanding of tasks in class 40%: Implementation status of numerical analysis is evaluated. Assignment 60%: Explanation of future works regarding water use and fish habitat and results of numerical analysis are evaluated. |
Message from instructor(s) |
Many researchers suggested that current velocity and water depth are significant influencing factors on fish habitat. Therefore, predicting the hydraulic variables by numerical analysis of flow can contribute to create preferable fish habitat. |
