Course description
This class is held at 10am on October 21, 2021 (Thu) online. We discuss history, current situation and policy of paddy agriculture in Japan and the United States, based on theories of agricultural and resource economics (said “Comparative Agricultural Policy”). We need a perspective of international comparison in order to consider the future of Japan’s paddy agriculture. This class gives participants an opportunity to learn advanced expertise in the advanced research on agricultural economy and symbiotic society, learning forefront knowledges and technologies. This class is composed of schooling and group work to promote participants understand.
Expected Learning
Participants are required to understand current situation and issues of paddy agriculture in Japan and the United States and to show necessary policies to solve them, referring theories of comparative agricultural policy. Please check the curriculum map in “the general information and course description”, too.
Course schedule
This class include the following four contents.
1) Agriculture, resources and state: basic theory of comparative agricultural policy
2) Issues and policies of paddy agriculture in Japan
3) Current situation and issues of paddy agriculture in California, the United States
4) Group work and discussion
Prerequisites
Participants are required to study for 15 hours before and after class. This study is devoted to making a report, reading the textbook and checking materials provided in class.

Assessment/Grading
Participants report what they discuss, and the teacher and participants score them (50%). Participants submit reports that the teacher gives theme after class (50%). Based on above tasks, the teacher grades participants.
Message from instructor(s)
Participants need not only to receive schooling by the teacher but also to aggressively join in discussion in order to understand comparative agricultural policy.
