Course description
This course is one of the fundamental subjects (Chemistry) for the department.

The purpose of this course is the acquisition of the fundamental knowledge on the constitution of atoms, molecules, and materials based on quantum chemistry in order to understand the structures and behaviors of materials dealt in natural sciences such as environmental science and natural resource science.
Intuitive understanding of quantum chemistry with the use of minimum number of formulas is aimed.
Firstly, consistent understanding of electronic structures, energies, and properties of atoms based on several simple quantum chemical principles is lectured.
Secondly, the mechanism of the formation of chemical bonds between atoms and the varieties of chemical bonds are lectured. The relation between the character of chemical bond and the structure of molecule including the bond is also discussed.
Thirdly, intermolecular interaction, which causes the association of molecules to materials and affects their structures and properties, is discussed briefly.
Expected Learning
(1) Quantum chemical understanding of (i) structures of atoms, (ii) electronic structures of atoms, and (iii) the principles with which properties of atoms are determined by their electronic structure.
(2) Quantum chemical understanding of (i) the principle of the formation of chemical bonds, (ii) varieties of chemical bonds, and (iii) the relation between the character of chemical bond and the structure of molecule including the bond.
(3) Understanding of intermolecular interaction which works in liquid and solid materials and determines their properties.

Prerequisites
Knowledge of chemistry and physics learned at high schools is helpful for understanding of the contents of this lecture. TAT Chemistry has deep relation with this lecture.

In addition to 30 hours for attending the course, you should conduct preparations and review by refering to textbooks and distributed lecture materials to satisfy our standard number of hours.

Some Students may be afraid that they have to remember a lot of matters when they study chemistry. To tell the truth, however, the structures and properties of atoms, molecules, and materials are governed by only a few fundamental principles. If you understand the principles and become accustom to seeing the world of materials according to the principles, you need to remember not many matters relating materials any more, and you will find how systematic and beautiful the world of material is.
