Course description
This intensive course is one of the subjects for "International Agricultural Science" and "AIMS Program". The course provides basic theories and outdoor practical exercise of charcoal making (biomass carbonization). Participants learn how to make charcoal (biochar) from bamboo and agricultural residues, then, share and exchange the ideas on how to use charcoal for agricultural development and environmental conservation in participants' countries. The intensive course will be held on November 20 and 27.
Expected Learning
1) To understand the basic theories and skills of charcoal making.
2) to exchange ideas on charcoal application for improving agriculture and environment in home countries.

Course schedule
Day 1 (November 20) Field exercise on charcoal making in Tsukui Farm, Sagamihara City, Kanagawa Prefecture
1. Agrowaste and local biomass
2. Pit kiln and smokeless ring device: Making charcoal from bamboo and mulberry branches
3. Chimney-standing device for making rice husk/sawdust charcoal
4. (Exercise) How can we apply charcoal technology for rural livelihoods and environmental conservation? (1)

Day 2 (November 27) Lecture and Exercise (10: 00- (lunch break) -16: 00) Fuchu Campus
1-2. (Lectures) Basic theories and technologies of charcoal making, Applications of charcoal
3-4. (Exercises) How can we apply charcoal technology for rural livelihoods and environmental conservation? (2)

Prerequisites
Participants need to register the Google Classroom "eqaeic2", and also register SPICA (01ia1010) in early October. Applicants can register this course during the regular registration period in early October (but cannot register it during the revising period).

No textbook will be used. Some materials will be uploaded on Google classroom.

Assessment/Grading
Reaction papers (50%) and report assignments (50%) will be used to evaluate the understanding of this class.

I am sorry but you have to pay the transportation expenses and get up early for the field class and suffer from smoke. If COVID-19 will outbreak again, the course may be offered online.
