Course description |
In order to realize a sustainable society, the local communities where people live and work must be sustainable. However, as we enter an era of a shrinking population, many local communities, both rural and urban, are losing their functions. This course will require participants to learn research methods in sociology (qualitative research method and participation observation) to grasp the elements to realize the sustainable local community. The research theme for FY2022 will be "Urban and Suburban Agriculture and Farmers: The Pride of Farmers Living in Tama. The Tama region of Tokyo, where our university campus is located, is a suburb of central Tokyo, where a relatively large amount of farmland remains and urban and suburban agriculture is practiced. However, it is also true that the size of the urban green space in the urbanized area is gradually shrinking. We will collect and analyze various data and interview farmers in the Tama region of Tokyo (Fuchu, Koganei, and Chofu Cities) to document the actual state of agriculture in the region and the pride and challenges faced by the farmers who support it. |
Expected Learning |
To obtain a fundamental method of social research through community survey such as an on-the-spot investigation, interview, participant observation and workshop in the research site. Also, course participants will learn how the residents and government work on their region’s problems by conducting research. Competency Development: Please refer to the Curriculum Map on the University's website (Three Policies). https://www.tuat.ac.jp/campuslife_career/campuslife/policy/ |
