Course description |
In this lecture we provide fundamental knowledge of shear properties of soils and stability problems. The stability problems include earth pressures, bearing capacities and slope stability. Real issues concerned with fill dams and soil structures are also offered. |
Expected Learning |
You will study fundamental, theoretical and advanced knowledge of shear properties of soils. The shear properties of soils are the most important among soil mechanical properties, and they are applied to earth pressures, bearing capacities and slope stabilities. |
Course schedule |
1. Introduction Objectives and background of this lecture 2. Shear properties of soils (1) Stresses, strains, principal stresses, principal strains, Mohr’s circle of stress and effective stress 3. Shear properties of soils (2) Shear tests, stress ? strain relationships 4. Shear properties of soils (3) Foundations of elasto-plastic theory 5. Shear strength of soils (1) Dilatancy, failure envelopes, and shear strength of soils 6. Shear strength of soils (2) Relationships between drained conditions and shear strength 7.
