Course description

This course explores the effects of forest management practice on various forest function. The objective of this course is to learn theory of silviculture, management of artificial and natural forests. And this is also to learn science technology of their backgrounds. Students will learn basic management practice and theory of artificial and natural forests.

Expected Learning

Course schedule

1-5.　Artificial conifer forests management Characteristics of conifer trees for artificial stand Plantation, management plan, history of forestry Breeding of trees, site preparation, planting, pruning, weeding Cleaning, thinning, density control, multi-storied forest Natural regeneration, etc. 6-9.　Broad-leaved forests management Characteristics of broad-leaved trees Stand structure of natural broad-leaved forest Site classification and distribution Improvement cutting, coppice forest system etc. 10. Discussion: How to manage Japanese forest in the future.

Prerequisites

It is recommended that students have completed the below courses or take the below courses together. Forest Ecology, Forest Dendrology, Forest Environment, Practice on Forest Dendrology, Practice on Silviculture, Practice on Forest Health and Arboriculture. In addition to 15 hours that students spend in the class, students are recommended to prepare for and revise the lectures, spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University and using the lecture handouts as well as the references specified below. I assign preparations for lessons every class to develop an understanding of topics of our course.

Homework (Quiz) before class (10%), report after class (40%), participate in the discussion (20%), final report (30%) Note: Students who attend less than 70% of this course can not get this credit.
