Course description |
A special subject of Rn. Reflecting on human activities that worsened the global environment, such as global warming and ozone depletion, an international standard called the ISO 14000 series was created to stop this, and activities to improve the environment have been established based on these standards. For the environmental management system that supports environmental improvement, outline the procedure up to certification through practice at a major certification organization. This section introduces general descriptions and uses of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), which is useful for quantifying the slogan “Eco-friendly” that is used easily, and analysis examples of wood products and wooden houses. |
Expected Learning |

Course schedule |
Describes the environmental management system and LCA. Lectures are generally given according to the following menu. 1. About global environmental issues 2. About ISO 14000 series 3. Explanation of environmental management system (ISO 14001) standards 4. Points for building an environmental management system 5. Problems in building an environmental management system (exercise) 6. Environmental impact assessment (lectures and exercises) 7. Identify environmental aspects (exercise) 8. Determine significant environmental aspects (exercise) 9. About the concept of LCA, its procedure, and related standards. 10. Differences and characteristics of the accumulation method and the input-output method in inventory, and the difference between PLCA and MLCA. 11. Inventory (LCI) in practice 12. Impact assessment (LCIA), sensitivity analysis and interpretation. 13. LCA history and major research institutes in the world. 14. LCA tools and databases used. 15. Introduction and explanation of case studies of product LCA and architectural LCA, and explanation of LCA application such as full cost method and carbon footprint. |
Prerequisites |
Professor Mizukami will give a lecture on the environmental management system on Tuesday, October-December for four days with a concentration of 3,4. In addition, Ando's LCA lecture will be held on Tuesday. Students are recommended to spend the standard amount of time as specified by the University |

Assessment/Grading |
Both Minakami and Ando will evaluate the report on a 50-point scale, and the total score will be evaluated. |
Message from instructor(s) |
In the first half of the lecture, we would like students to learn about the necessity of environmental conservation and the effectiveness of the management system for this purpose, and to use it in practice after coming out in society. In the second half, we would like to learn that LCA is effective as a tool for measuring the environmental impact of products, referring to examples of wooden products and wooden houses. |
