Course description |
This course is designed for students who have little or no experience of studying Japanese. It helps learners acquire basic communication skills needed in Japanese academic life during their stay in Japan. The participants are also expected to learn general knowledge about Japan and skills for further Japanese study. The course includes group work and activities to share their thoughts and experiences in Japanese. This course is offered to international students as an introductory Japanese language course in Global Language and Cultural Studies. |
Expected Learning |
1. To acquire a basic understanding of Japanese sentence structure, vocabulary, and discourse patterns which enable them to carry out an everyday conversation. 2. To understand general knowledge about Japan Competency development: Communication skills, Intercultural understanding, Presentation skills |

1. Orientation, Kana system (hiragana and katakana), greetings, self-introduction 2. Useful expressions, strategy expressions 3. Talking about yourself / noun sentences, particles 4. Talking about preferences/particles, verb sentences 5. Ordering and requesting / particles 6. Describing places and locations / Existential sentences 7. Making requests and expressing time / Verb sentences, te-form 8. Summary and Mid-term Examination (mini-presentation) 9. Invitation / Adverbs, expressions of invitation 10. Moving and describing / Adjectives 11. Collecting information / Directives, Adjectives (2) 12. Describing the past / Past tenses of verbs and adjectives 13. Describing and explaining the past / Past tenses of predicates 14. Making plans/ ~tai form 15. Final exam and presentation |
Prerequisites |
This course carries 1 credit. In addition to 30 hours you spend in the class and 10 hours in completing the essay task and presentation preparation, you are expected to prepare for and review, the classes spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University for each class, using the handouts and the reference books specified below. |
