1. Alkyl halides: structure and synthesis (Textbook Chapter 6) You will learn about the structure, properties, and synthesis of alkyl halides. 2. Nucleophilic substitution reactions of alkyl halides 1 (Textbook Chapter 6) You will learn about SN2 reactions of alkyl halides. 3. Nucleophilic substitution reactions of alkyl halides 2 (Textbook Chapter 6) You will learn about SN1 reactions of alkyl halides. 4. Elimination reactions of alkyl halides 1 (Textbook Chapter 6) You will learn about E2 reactions of alkyl halides. 5. Elimination reactions of alkyl halides 2 (Textbook Chapter 6) You will learn about E1 reactions of alkyl halides. 6. Alkenes: structure and synthesis 1 (Textbook Chapter 7) You will learn about stability of alkenes and cycloalkenes, synthesis of alkenes by dehydrohalogenation. 7. Alkenes: structure and synthesis 2 (Textbook Chapter 7) You will learn about stereospecific E2 reactions and multistep synthesis of alkenes. 8. Exam (1~7) 9. Understanding of the structure and reactivity of organic molecules will be key to organic synthesis of drugs and functional materials as well as understanding in biomolecular reactions. You will learn the mechanism and design strategy with molecular level. Approaches to the problem sets in the homework will be discussed in the following class.
