Oscillation and waves form the foundation of physics in a wide range of fields: mechanical engineering, construction engineering, material engineering, and electronic engineering. In dynamics considering one mass point, the displacement of a mass point is expressed by a one-variable function of time, whereas the displacement of a one-dimensional wave is a two-variable function of time and space. In this lecture, we start with movement of a certain mass point, proceed to vibration of several mass points linked to each other, and finally learn wave like a string. In oscillation, we can see various unique characteristics of waves: beat of two oscillations, standing wave, interference, and diffraction. The most important concept to explain these phenomena is the principle of wave superposition. Therefore, we focus on 'coupled oscillator' and 'wave superposition principle' in this lecture.

Prerequisites
The completion is recommended for students in the Department of Applied Physics and Chemical Engineering.
