Course description
We will study thermodynamics as a fundamental of physical chemistry (from 1st to 3rd chapter in Atkins' Physical Chemistry, 10th edition). The thermodynamics can describe significant world rules and phenomena. Mastering the thermodynamics will contribute to the solutions for energy problem, material design, environmental problem, and so on.
Expected Learning
Learning the contents from 1st to 3rd chapters in Atkins' Physical Chemistry, 10th edition. Learning and Treating quantitatively the conception of heat, work, enthalpy, entropy, free energy, and so on.
Course schedule
1st lecture: Guidance and Chapter 1 The properties of gases, The perfect gas
2nd lecture: Chapter 1 The kinetic model
3rd lecture: Chapter 1 Real gases
4th lecture: Mathematics (partial differential, integral etc.)
5th lecture: Chapter 2 Internal energy, Enthalpy
6th lecture: Chapter 2 Themochemistry, Standard enthalpy of formation
7th lecture: Chapter 2 State functions and exact differentials
8th lecture: Chapter 2 Adiabatic changes
9th lecture: Chapter 3 Entropy (The second law of thermodynamics, entropy, Carnot cycle, Clausius inequality)
10th lecture: Chapter 3 The measurement of entropy (The third law of thermodynamics, The Nernst heat theorem)
11th lecture: Chapter 3 Concentrating on the system (The Helmholtz and Gibbs energies)
12th lecture: Chapter 3 Combining the First and Second Laws 1 (Properties of the internal energy)
13th lecture: Chapter 3 Combining the First and Second Laws 2 (Properties of the Gibbs energy)
14th lecture: Summary of the class: Terminal Examination (range: 1st to 13th lecture)
15th lecture: Summary of the class: Explanation of Terminal Examination
*Schedule may change based on the understanding of each lecture.
Prerequisites
None
Required Text(s) and Materials
Atkins’ Physical Chemistry, Peter Atkins and Julio de Paula 10th edition

If necessary; Students Solutions Manual to Accompany Atkins’ Physical Chemistry, tenth Edition, Charles Trapp, Marshall Cady, Carmen Giunta, Oxford University Press.
References
Practice on each class can be a reference. Bring a scientific calculator.

Find items explaining physical chemistry (thermodynamics) in library by yourself. They greatly help your self-learning.
