Course description
Chemical kinetics (reaction kinetics), which is the study quantitatively and/or theoretically dealing with rate of chemical processes, provides a useful methodology for understanding and elucidating a reaction mechanism. This lecture gives an explanation for the definition of reaction rates, reaction rate laws, reaction mechanisms and so on. Participants should take “Calculus”, “Physical Chemistry I”, and “Physical Chemistry II”.
This course is one of a group of physical chemistry courses classified as basic subjects in the Department of Applied Chemistry.
Expected Learning
1) Participants can solve a reaction rate equation using a differential equation.
2) Participants can give an explanation for the reaction mechanism using the concept of the kinetics.

1st Lecture: Explanation of the present lecture, and Introduction to the present lecture (Experimental procedure for the investigation of the kinetics, Concepts of kinetic and thermodynamic control
2nd Lecture: Definition of reaction rates (Rate equation, Rate constant, Reaction order)
3rd Lecture: Integral rate equation (First order reaction, Second order reaction, Half-life period)
4th Lecture: Near-equilibrium reaction, and Temperature dependency of the reaction rate (Relaxation method, and Arrhenius equation)
5th Lecture: Elementary process and consecutive reaction (Pre-equilibrium, Steady-state approximation, Rate-determining step)
6th Lecture: Homogeneous catalysis (Enzyme, Michelis-Menten mechanism)
7th Lecture: Unimolecular reaction (Lindemann-Hinshelwood mechanism) and Chain reaction)
8th Lecture: Summarization of the contents of 1st-7th lectures
Midterm test
9th Lecture: Kinetics of explosion, polymerization, and photo-reaction
10th Lecture: Collision theory and Kinetic Theory of Gases.
11th Lecture: Molecular motion in solution, and Diffusion.
12th Lecture: Diffusion-controlled reaction, and Activated complex theory (Eyring equation)

Questions are designed to assess the understanding of and the ability to explain the topics dealt in the lectures.
The results in the 2021 academic year for the whole class is as follows: S (5%)、A (25%)、B (33%)、C (33%)、D (4%).

Participants should acquire the method for solving basic differential equations, which are frequently used in this lecture. Participants should carry out a review by use of practice problems given in the lecture.
