Course description |
As a required subject in the curriculum of biomedical engineering, in this course, students will study energy band and properties of semiconductors using the basic concepts of quantum physics. Then, LED, semiconductor laser, and photo diodes are also studied. Furthermore, we study chemical sensors, such as biosensors and gas sensors. |
Expected Learning |
Students are expected to understand the basic concepts of solid state physics, semiconductor physics and devices, and biosensors. Corresponding criteria in the Diploma Policy: See the Curriculum maps. |
Course schedule |
Week 1-2: k-space (reciprocal lattice, diffraction, and Brillouin Zone) Week 3-4: Energy band (Bloch function and Empty lattice approximation) Week 5-6: Carrier concentration (density of states and Fermi distribution) Week 7-8: pn junction (basic concept) Week 9: Photoresponse of semiconductor (absorption and emission) , photodiodes Week 10: LED, semiconductor lasers Week 11: Chemical sensors (basic concept) Week 12: Receptors, electrical double layers Week 13-14: Biosenosors (electrochemical, FETs, PCR, and so on) Week 15: Summary Examinations |
