Course description
(Lecture outline)
This course is designed to provide graduate students with numerous opportunities to use English for scientific communication. The ultimate goal is to prepare students to write reports based on their own research work and to effectively communicate with other researchers and scientists in English.
Expected Learning
At the end of the lecture, students should be able to acquire enough communication skills to enable them to:
(1) search scientific papers associated with their research topics
(2) write reports based on their own research work and to effectively communicate with other researchers and scientists in English.
(3) write research proposals in English.

・Similarities and differences among scientific journals and writing styles

・ Choosing appropriate research titles and captions for figures and tables (II)

・The main components of a scientific report (Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, Conclusions, References, Acknowledgement)

・Commonly used sentence/paragraph connectors in scientific reports (II)

・Choosing sentence/paragraph connectors in scientific reports (exercise)

・ Identifying and correcting mistakes in scientific reports

・ Writing reports based on "model" Laboratory experiments

・Writing reports based on "model" Field experiments

・Writing reports based on "model" Questionnaire-based surveys

・Citing references in scientific reports (II)

・ Presenting statistical results in scientific reports (II)

・ Writing of acknowledgement

・Commonly used expressions in oral/poster presentations

・Presentation and submission of final reports
Prerequisites
In addition to 30 hours that students spend in the class, students are recommended to prepare for and revise the lectures, spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University and using the lecture handouts as well as the references specified below.
