Course description |
(Lecture outline) This course is designed to provide graduate students with numerous opportunities to use English for scientific communication. The ultimate goal is to prepare students to write reports based on their own research work and to effectively communicate with other researchers and scientists in English. In addition to the topics below, there will also be discussions on global issues to deepen the understanding of students interested in working in a multicultural environment. There will also be discussions on the search for sustainable ways of utilizing global resources to satisfy our energy, food and fiber needs. |
Expected Learning |
At the end of the lecture, students should be able to acquire enough communication skills to enable them to: (1) present their research work orally in English. (2) participate in seminars, workshops, discussions ask and express their opinions and comments in English. (3) write reports based on their own research work and to effectively communicate with other researchers and scientists in English. See the curriculum maps. |

Week 1: Orientation: An explanation of the course content and expectations. Week 2: Similarities and differences among scientific journals and writing styles Week3: Choosing appropriate research titles and captions for figures and tables (II) Week 4: The main components of a scientific report (Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, Conclusions, References, Acknowledgement) Week 5: Commonly used sentence/paragraph connectors in scientific reports (II) Week 6: Choosing sentence/paragraph connectors in scientific reports (exercise) Week 7: Identifying and correcting mistakes in scientific reports Week 8: Writing reports based on "model" Laboratory experiments Week 9: Writing reports based on "model" Field experiments Week 10: Writing reports based on "model" Questionnaire-based surveys Week 11: Citing references in scientific reports (II) Week 12: Presenting statistical results in scientific reports (II) Week 13: Writing of acknowledgement Week 14: Commonly used expressions in oral/poster presentations Week 15: Presentation and submission of final reports |
Prerequisites |
In addition to 30 hours that students spend in the class, students are recommended to prepare for and review the lectures, spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University and using the lecture handouts as well as the references specified below. |
