Course description
This course deals with human language and linguistic theories. Topics are selected for graduate students to develop basic understanding of the structures and functions of natural languages and language faculty of human beings. The lectures will cover the topics of: 1) the history of modern linguistics, 2) the basic ideas and methods of sub-fields of linguistics and the structure of linguistic knowledge, 3) characteristics of human language compared with other communication systems, 4) the phenomenon of sound symbolism and how linguists are exploring this topic.

Expected Learning
Students taking this course are expected to:
1. understand the history of modern linguistics,
2. know the basic ideas and methods of sub-fields of linguistics and the structure of linguistic knowledge,
3. understand characteristics of human language compared with other communication systems,
4. understand the phenomenon of sound symbolism and how linguists are exploring this topic.

Prerequisites
To fully participate in this course, basic English skills enough to understand the lectures and to take notes are required.
In addition to 30 hours for lectures, students are recommended to study 15 hours in total, e.g., for preparation and review. This is the standard amount of time as specified by the University.
