Course description

This class will focus on oral communications in science/engineering discipline. After ice-braking session, we’ll learn some basic terms and expressions in English that is essential needs for scientific communications. These sessions also cover some basic vocabularies, terms and expressions.
Then, group work will pick up an basic “experiment” and each group prepare for the instructors note in English. Some of the group member will play an instructor’s roll to do the experiment.
The other topic in this course covers individual research (or research plan) presentation including Q&A session.
Beside the class work, we may have chance to visit JICA Tsukuba’s Agriculture research trainees for exchange session. (This may announced at the first session of this class.)

Web based class or Class on the net may cause an alternation of above mentioned target setting. That fully depends on the Covid-19 situation at Utsunomiya U.
Expected Learning
Students will improve their English proficiency in terms of scientific/engineering communication.
Including, vocabulary building in daily research work in a Laboratory, poster and oral presentation skills as well as in the preparations in your research topic.

Course schedule
1 Orientation and Ice breaking Self introduction, Scheduling and grouping.
2、3、4 Lectures on general science communication followed by the group work for “Lab. Tour” planning sessions. Real Laboratory Tour will be scheduled.
5、6、7、8 Pick up a simple “experiment” or “field survey” as an group material, and prepare for a instructions manual for undergrads. Then each group will make a try to instruct the senior students (group project) w/ the manual prepared.
9、10、11、12 A poster and 15 min oral presentation on individual research plan/proposal with abstract, visual aid (ppt. slides), scripts. Step by step instructions will be provided based on the standard procedures in preparation for presentations. Students may be required to report and share the progress at the beginning of each class session.
13、14、Oral presentation (15 minutes) with Q&A sessions. Also a peer evaluation results be shared for further improvement.
15、 Gallery-Walk poster session and share the difference between poster and oral sessions among class members.

Class may have chance to visit JICA Tsukuba for exchange session with JICA’s agriculture research trainees in November. (Need additional arrangements w/ JICA so that the detailed schedule be announced in class)
