Course description
May, 17, 2022 (Tue) 10:00 - Face to face
Seminar room, 2nd floor,
Center for Weed and Wildlife Management building, Utsunomiya University

An intensive lecture will be held on May 17, 2022 at Utsunomiya University.
This lecture will introduce natural product chemistry and mass spectrometry chemistry.
This course is designed to provide advanced knowledge and skills in natural organic compounds and to develop advanced expertise in the field of biological control science."
The lecture will be conducted through group discussion, general discussion and poster session.
Expected Learning
Yielding a single compound from natural source is an inevitable problem from the old age. “isolation of natural product” is still the slowest developing field in natural product chemistry, because all isolation work differs from the previous one, in the source of material, quantity in hands, and particularly in the person who is performing this isolation, even though it is repeating the known procedure. None of them is identical with the previous ones. This lecture will give some ideas on how to isolate natural compounds with the aid. But it is only schematic manual. Actual isolation and purification of natural products must not be stereotyped; it requires critical spirit, creativity and originality.
Course schedule
① Isolation of Natural Products
② Centrifugal Partition Chromatographic
③ Supercritical Fluid Chromatography
④ Mass Spectrometry and Metabolomics Analysis
Prerequisites
In addition to the 7.5 hours of class time and the time required for writing reports, students are required to refer to the lecture materials and reference books distributed to them, and to prepare and review according to the standard number of hours at the university.
Required Text(s) and Materials
Handouts will be provided in class.
References
To be announced in the lectures.
Assessment/Grading
Class participation attitude: 50%: Attendance and contribution to group activities (surveys, presentations) will be evaluated.
Report:30%:A small assignment will be submitted after the lecture and will be used as a point of evaluation.
Examinations: 20%: Evaluated by the performance of quizzes on related knowledge during the lecture.
