Course description
This is a part of the Courses of Animal Production Science, and its completion is recommended for students in the Department of Biological Production.

[Purpose] Livestock means animals that have been improved and bred to improve human lives. Foods such as milk, meat, and eggs produced by livestock contribute significantly as a source of high-quality animal protein and support rich dietary lifestyle. The purpose of this lecture is to learn comprehensively the characteristics of livestock and the basic of technology supporting the livestock industry. Lectures will be given with the latest knowledge in addition to the basic knowledge described in textbooks.
[Overview]
1. Livestock origins, classification and characteristics; You learn the basic characteristics of livestock species, such as pig, cattle, chicken, horse, sheep, goat, etc., and their breeds, which are basis of production of animal products.
2. Scientific base of livestock production technology; We learn livestock breeding, reproduction, nutritional physiology, feeding management, hygiene, and behavior and welfare, which relate to livestock production technology. Also, we learn animal products processing, utilization of by-products, livestock farm management, and the current circumstances surrounding livestock industry.
Expected Learning
The standard of this lecture is to understand the basics of animal science comprehensively; how livestock are raised, how livestock products are produced, and what technologies contribute to livestock production.

1. Overview of livestock, livestock production, and livestock science
2. The current status of swine industry and characteristics of pigs
3. The current status of dairy and beef industry and characteristics of cattle
4. The current status of poultry industry and characteristics of chicken
5. The other minor livestock species (horses, sheep, goats, etc.)
6. Livestock breeding and genetics
7. Physiological basis of animal production
8. Feed and feeding management of livestock
9. Processing of animal products
10. Utilization of livestock byproduct (hide, bone, and useful components from internal organs and blood)
11. Livestock hygiene
12. Livestock reproduction management and related technology
13. Behavior and welfare of livestock
14. Farm management and current circumstances surrounding livestock industry
15. Discussion
Prerequisites
This lecture will be the basis of Animal Morphology and Physiology, Animal Nutrition, Animal Reproduction, Animal Breeding and Management, and Animal Hygiene. Therefore, we recommend strongly to take this lecture if you have a plan to learn these subjects.
Students are recommended to prepare for and revise the lectures, spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University and using the lecture handouts as well as the references specified below.
