Course description
Students will learn the basic vocabulary and grammar and the basic communicative skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) of Spanish. Toward this goal, students need to take both “Spanish I” and “Spanish II” in the same year.

This course is offered as the first part of the two-part Spanish language course of the Global Language and Cultural Studies.
Expected Learning
Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to:
1. have conversations in everyday life.
2. have a basic knowledge on the Spanish grammar and vocabulary.
3. read and write simple sentences.
4. be familiar with the diversity the Hispanic world.

Course schedule
Week 1 Orientation.
Lesson 1: Pronunciation and orthography.
Week 2 Lesson 1: Greetings and self introduction.
Week 3 Lesson 2: Gender and number of nouns. Indefinite and definite articles.
Week 4 Lesson 2: Cardinal numbers (0-29). Existential.
Week 5 Lesson 3: Subjective pronouns. Verb “ser”. Adjectives.
Week 6 Lesson 3: Negatives. Interrogatives.
Week 7 Mini test.
Lesson 4,5: Regular verbs. Possessives (unstressed).
Week 8 Lesson 4: Expressions about frequency. Days of week.
Week 9 Lesson 5: Time expressions.
Week 10 Lesson 6: Demonstratives. Verb “estar”.
Week 11 Lesson 6: Distinction of verbs ser, estar, and hay. Cardinal numbers (30-999)
Week 12 Mini test.
Lesson 7: Direct objective pronouns. Verbs “saber” and “conocer”.
Week 13 Lesson 7: Irregular verbs (irregular first singular form),
Week 14 Review about the verbs.
Week 15 Wrap-up.
Prerequisites
It is desirable to take the classes of “Spanish II” and “Spanish for Intercultural Understanding” to acquire comprehensively the basic skill of the language.
Students are recommended to spend 45 minutes in preparing for each class, and another 45 minutes in completing assignments and revising the class.

Instructions on the references will be provided at the first class.
Assessment/Grading
Class participation will be assessed by active contribution to class activities (15%).
Mini quizzes will be given after finishing every two or three lessons to assess students’ communicative skill (15%).
In Final exam students must show that they have learned interactive skills based on a proper understanding of the Hispanic culture that are required to learn through the course (70%).
