Students will learn the basic vocabulary and grammar and the basic communicative skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) of Spanish. Toward this goal, students need to take both “Spanish I” and “Spanish II” in the same year. Week 1 Orientation Review (Lesson 1-7). Week 2 Lesson 8: Irregular verbs (root-changing verbs: e > ie). Verb “tener”. Week 3 Lesson 8: Indirect objective pronouns. Week 4 Lesson 9: Irregular verbs (root-changing verbs: o > ue, e > i). Week 5 Lesson 9: Indefinite pronouns. Negative pronouns. Week 6 Miniquiz. Lesson 10: Verbs “ir”, “venir”, “decir”, and “oir”. Week 7 Lesson 10: Possessives (stressed). Week 8 Lesson 11: Verb “gustar”. Prepositional pronouns. Week 9 Lesson 11: Comparatives. Week 10 Miniquiz. Lesson 12: Reflexive verbs (intransitive and transitive) Week 11: Lesson 12: Reflexive verbs (impersonal constructions) Week 12: Miniquiz Relatives. Week 13: Tenses and modes of Spanish. | Prerequisites |

It is desirable to take the classes of “Spanish II” and “Spanish for Intercultural Understsanding” to acquire comprehensively the basic skill of the language. Students are recommended to spend 45 minutes in preparing for each class, and another 45 minutes in completing assignments and revising the class. |

| Assessment/Grading |
|
Class participation will be assessed by active contribution to class activities (15%). Mini quizzes will be given after finishing every two or three lessons to assess students’ communicative skill (15%). In Final exam students must show that they have learned interactive skills based on proper understanding of the Hispanic culture that are required to learn through the course (70%). |
