Course description |
In performing surgery, various basic knowledge (asepsis, wound management, handling of surgical instruments, hemostasis, etc.) and techniques supported by such knowledge are necessary. This course aims to provide students with an understanding of the theoretical and safe surgical procedures related to these methods. Students will also learn the basic theory of anesthesia, pain management, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and intensive care, as well as the basic knowledge of drugs and techniques used in each and how to apply them. This lecture corresponds to "Soft Tissue Surgery" in the Model Core Curriculum for Veterinary Education established by the Japanese Association of Establishment for Veterinary Education(JAEVE). This lecturer of this course has the firsthand clinical experiences at veterinary hospital, and gives lectures on clinical cases as necessary to gain knowledge on the actual clinical situations and solutions. |
Expected Learning |
Aseptic methods and disinfection of equipment required for sterile surgery, surgical wound infection and its protection, names and uses of surgical instruments and energy devices, use of suture materials, sedation, local anesthesia, mechanism of action and use of general anesthesia, pain and analgesia, anesthesia monitoring, how to deal with abnormalities during anesthesia, CPR, euthanasia. Students should be able to understand and explain the basics of veterinary surgical practice. Prerequisites |
It is recommended that students have a thorough understanding of General Surgery prior to taking this course. In addition to the 30 hours of class time and the time required to complete assignments, students should refer to the distributed lecture materials and reference books and complete pre and post-work equivalent to the standard number of hours for this university. |
