Course description
In the first half of this course, students will learn about various issues related to agriculture through the study of basic theories of agricultural economics and acquire the ability to consider the causes and solutions of problems based on their relationship with the overall social economy.

In the second half of the course, students will take a look at dietary habits and food supply structures from the perspective of food system studies, which comprehensively views food production, distribution, and consumption, and learn and think about issues related to food in Japan and abroad.

This course is one of the specialized courses in the Department of Biological Production. Students who are interested in food distribution and social scientific analysis based on the characteristics of agriculture and rural areas are welcome to take this course.
Expected Learning
To acquire basic knowledge related to agricultural economics and food systems, and to gain insight into real agricultural and food issues and be able to discuss them in a realistic manner.

Prerequisites
Students are recommended to have taken economics (mainly microeconomics) offered in the previous semester.
Required Text(s) and Materials
The class will be conducted using PowerPoint slides and no specific textbook will be used.
Class handouts will be uploaded to Google Drive by the day before class, so students are requested to log in to their university Google accounts, download, and print them, or make them available during class on their laptops or other devices. The instructor will not print or distribute handouts.

Assessment/Grading
Commitment (each time) (15%): Evaluate the contents of comment cards and other materials.
Mid-term exam (57%): Evaluate students' understanding of basic agricultural economics and agricultural issues.
Final exam (28%): To evaluate the level of understanding of the food system and food distribution.
