Course description |
In Japan, farm households have long played a role as a source of labor for other industries, but since the 1990s their role has become minor. Once the development of the Japanese economy, including the manufacturing industry, was based on the abundant labor supplied by farm households, but this has stagnated since the 1990s, and at the same time, the ties between agriculture and other industries through the labor market have faded. On the other hand, Japanese agriculture, once dominated by family-run businesses, has experienced an increase in the number of agricultural corporations since the 2010s while the backdrop of a sharp decline in the number of farm households. The number of people employed in agriculture has also been on the rise, as is the same with the number of agricultural workers. Thus, the linkage between agriculture and other industries in the labor market is becoming closer again in recent years. This course will follow the changing linkages between agriculture and other industries in the labor market and their status from the perspective of agricultural economics. |
