Course description
In Global Advanced Science, students learn in vivid detail about internationally competitive, cutting-edge research from internationally active distinguished researcher, and about how research develops through scientist network and collaborations across the world. The lectures also include examples of how basic studies are fundamental to and applied to the cutting-edge research, and of the research environment in the globalized society. Through such experience, students are encouraged to consider the values of their studies and research in a broad context and towards their own future. This course will aid students to elevate their global awareness and improve their English communication skills in practice.

This lecture course is included in Global Integrated Studies of the Liberal Arts and Fundamental Studies, and offers students opportunities to apply and integrate their knowledge and skills obtained in the foundation courses during their first two years in the university.
Expected Learning
1. To participate in lectures and discussion on scientific research and to be able to describe important points of the lecture and discussion in English
2. To be able to explain own thoughts on international research environment and how research develops through international activities

Course schedule

< Common session1: 1 class >
1: Introductory class.
The objectives and outline of the course are described in Japanese, as well as the importance of scientific presentation and discussion conducted in English.

< Seminar session1: 3 classes >
2: Preparatory class.
The topic and content of the lecture planned for the 3rd class are briefly explained in Japanese, so that students are familiarized with specific terms and can prepare for discussion.

3: Lecture by Dr Julien Boulange on his research.
The lecture title is “Assessing and mapping water-related challenge at the global scale, an introduction to water risk”.
Questions-and-answers for the lecture, followed by discussion. The language used in this class is English.

4: Lecture 2 by Dr Julien Boulange on how fundamental studies lead to advanced research. The lecture is followed by discussion on international research environment and collaborations, and also on how to relate own studies to the future research activities. The languages used in this class is English.

< Seminar session2: 3 classes >
5: Preparatory class.
The topic and content of the lecture planned for the 6th class are briefly explained in Japanese, so that students are familiarized with specific terms and can prepare for discussion.

6: Lecture by Prof Koiwa from Texas A&M University on his research
The lecture title is “Advances in Plant Stress Tolerance Research”.
Questions-and-answers for the lecture, followed by discussion. The language used in this class is English.

7: Lecture 2 by Prof Koiwa on how fundamental studies lead to advanced research.
The lecture title is "Embracing imperfection and independency".
The lecture is followed by discussion on international research environment and collaborations, and also on how to relate own studies to the future research activities. The languages used in this class is English.

< Common session2: 1 class >
8: Concluding class.
Dr Fukudome, a TUAT alumnus who obtained PhD in USA and continues his research as a postdoc in Indiana University, USA, will give a seminar on his experiences and research in international environments. The language used in this session is English.

Prerequisites
In addition to 16 hours in the class, students are recommended to prepare for and revise the classes spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University.

・Class participation (30%): Contribution to the discussion and lectures throughout

・Written report (50%): For each seminar session, a report is assessed, which should include summary and important points of the lectures and discussion, as well as own thoughts and ideas about international research environment and career paths
