Course description
This 2-credit course provides students with a way of thinking and technique for utilization of material and energy resources from forests and sustainable utilization of forests as environment. It will address the fundamentals of engineering for resource utilization and its impacts on human and environment that are part of the Forest Science Program. The topics covered are engineering for wood production, forest machinery and operation and forest. Students will learn about forest operation, forest machinery and their system.
Expected Learning
Describe various operations through planting to harvesting of trees.
Describe typical operational systems of timber production.
Describe the definition of productivity and calculate it.
Describe regulations for labor safety.
Describe indicators and measurement methods for labor load.
Describe functions, uses and mechanism of forest machinery.
Describe fundamental knowledge of yarding cables.
Describe relationship between geographical features and forest operation system.

Prerequisites
In addition to 30 hours in classes and time required for completing assignments, students are recommended to prepare for and review the lectures, spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University and using the lecture handouts as well as the references.

Assessment/Grading
Quiz: Quiz will be given weekly.
Final examination (80 %) and quizzes (20 %) are both assessed.
Students in this class are assumed to attend at least two thirds of classes.
