Course description
The purpose of this lecture is to consider the environmental history in the case of Japanese traditional society. This lecture will approach that purpose by paying attention to the following things such as historical landscapes, the lifestyle cultures, the livelihood cultures, which were formed between the people and nature. The era focused on in this lecture is the period from early modern to modern times (from 17th to the early 20th) in Japan. The historical changes in the urban landscape in Japan will be also focused on in this lecture. Through this lecture, I’d like you to have the knowledge about the characteristics of the traditional civilization that existed in Japan before industrialized civilization appeared and the disappearing process of the traditional civilization from a view point of environmental cultural history.
Expected Learning
1. To feel historical perspective as one of the methodology of Social Sciences and Humanities that aims to rethink our living times, society and civilization by combining spatial relative assessment and timewise relative assessment.
2. To develop historical perspective as one of Liberal Arts subjects that aim to consider, feel and re-experience things from different viewpoints through the eyes of people who come from other regions, civilizations and so on.
3. To be able to understand the characteristics of the Japanese traditional culture and the process how they were formed in the context of world history.

Prerequisites
This is part of package subjects in major subjets of Department of Ecoregion Science.
In addition to 30 hours that students spend in the class, students are recommended to prepare for and revise the lectures, spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University for each class.

Assessment/Grading
・The grade will be carried out based on the assignment you submit in each class.
・You will be able to have 7 points per an assignment submission. You will have 13 times to submit the assignments. However, the distribution of scores is tentative, and please refer to google classroom for its final determination.
・If you’d like to apply, you will be allowed to submit a report and receive additional points. The teacher is going to grade the report out of 20 points. However, it is not used to make a D judgment higher than a C judgment.
・If you’d like to submit a report, please email the teacher. The subject and the deadline for the report will be included in the reply.
・The final notification will be described in the google-classroom of this subject.
