Course description
This intensive course is one of the subjects of "AIMS Program" (for exchange students). It provides basic theories and outdoor practical exercise of charcoal making (biomass carbonization) through online class. Participants learn how to make charcoal (biochar) from bamboo and agricultural residues, then, share and exchange the ideas on how to use charcoal for agricultural development and environmental conservation in participants' countries.
Expected Learning
1) To understand the basic theories and skills of charcoal making.
2) to exchange ideas on charcoal application for improving agriculture and environment in home countries.

Course schedule
Day 1 (November 19) Field exercise on charcoal making in Tsukui Farm, Sagamihara City, Kanagawa Prefecture (9:00- (lunch break) -16:00)
1. Agrowaste and local biomass
2. Pit kiln and smokeless ring device: Making charcoal from bamboo and mulberry branches
3. Chimney-standing device for making rice-husk and fallen-leaf charcoal
4. Weed charcoal making

Day 2 (November 26) Lecture and Exercise in Fuchu Campus (10: 00- (lunch break) -16: 00)
1-2. (Lectures) Basic theories and technologies of charcoal making, Applications of charcoal
3-4. (Exercises) How can we apply charcoal technology for rural livelihoods and environmental conservation?
Prerequisites
Students will be accepted if they meet the following requirements.
1. Participation in Gakkensai and enrollment in Gakkenbai or Gakubai (or alternative student insurance).
2. At least two weeks have passed since you came to Japan/returned from overseas (to prevent livestock infectious diseases at the farm).
3. You must have registered "01ia1010" during the regular course registration period in early October. Additional registrations during the correction period will not be accepted.
4. In addition to class hours of 16 hours, students are required to refer to reference books and lecture materials, and prepare and review according to the standard number of hours at the university.

Reaction papers and positive participation during the class (50%) and an assignment report after the class (50%)

Please prepare own lunch and drink. and wear clothes and shoes for conducting fieldwork under hot & cold, dusty (or muddy if rainy), or smoky conditions with "land leeches" sucking our blood.
