Course description
In this course, new concepts such as enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs energy will be introduced to deeply understand physical and chemical changes. This course becomes the foundation of acquisition of the Physical Chemistry II and III.
Expected Learning
Students who mastered this course will be able to tackle chemistry from the viewpoint of thermodynamics.

Week 1: Guidance
Week 2: Equation of state for a perfect gas
Week 3 and 4: Real gas
Week 5 - 7: The first law of thermodynamics
Week 8 and 9: Thermochemistry
Week 10 and 11: The second and third law of thermodynamics
Week 12 and 13: Gibbs and Helmholtz energies
Week 14: The appearance of a stable phase
Week 15: Summary of the 1st to 14th lectures and final examination
Prerequisites
In addition to 30 hours in classes, students are recommended to prepare for and review the lectures, spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University.

Assessment/Grading
The grade evaluation in this class is premised on all attendances, and
comprehensively evaluates the reports and final test. Standard study
time set by the university is required to get the grade.
The rate of evaluation is as follows: score of the reports (30%) and the
final test (70%). Grade will be given according to the following
criteria by comprehensive evaluation: S: 90 points or more, A: 80 or
more and less than 90 points, B: 70 or more and less than 80 points, C:
60 or more and less than 70 points.
Message from instructor(s)
Thermodynamics have many mathematical formulas, and seems to be difficult at first glance. However, if you deeply understand the contents, you will notice that there are not many key formulas and many formulas can be expanded from basic formulas. Train yourself to derive the formulas.
