In this lecture, you will study the most advanced research related to bioengineering that is actually being conducted in the department of lifescience and Biotechnology (https://www.aist.go.jp/aist_e/dept/en_dlsbt.html) of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), especially research related to nano-bioengineering using nano-scale materials. The objective of this course is to learn the basic principles of each part of the course, and to deepen the understanding of how these principles are connected to practical research and development. Faculty members from AIST of the collaborative graduate school will give lectures on the background and future prospects of cutting-edge technologies.
Expected Learning
Be able to prepare agenda as a student who will be involved with life science, biotechnology research in future.

Week1:The outline of the lecture will be explained in the first guidance.
Week2-4:Nanobiosensing 1-3, Dr. Nakamura will discuss intracellular measurement technology using nanoscale materials, especially the technology using nanoneedles.
Week5,6: Nanobiomaterials 1,2, Dr. Kim will explain the application of nanomaterials for the evaluation of properties of target biomolecules and cells. In addition, principles of various microscopic techniques, which are basis of the applications, will be explained.
Week7-10:Genome Editing 1-4, Dr. Kato will intoroduce genome editing protein and nucleic acid chemistry, which are attracting attention as a nanobioengineering technology that can freely manipulate genome sequece.
Week11-15:Nanobiomechanics 1-5, Dr. Yamagishi will discuss the structure of the cytoskeleton and its role in cell motility and adhesion. Especially, the mechanism by which intermediate filaments and mechanosensitive channels are involved in the mechanical properties of cancer cells will be discuss.
The aim is to understand the direction of biotechnology throughout this lecture.
The theme of the report will be presented in the 13th lecture and collected in the 15th lecture.
