Course description
Students will learn the basic vocabulary and grammar and the basic communicative skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) of Spanish. Toward this goal, students need to take both “Spanish I” and “Spanish II” in the same year.

This course is offered as the first part of the two-part Spanish language course of the Global Language and Cultural Studies.
Expected Learning
Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to:
1. have basic conversations concerning daily life.
2. read and write elementary sentences based on the solid lexical and grammatical knowledge of Spanish.
3. have deeper knowledge of the Spanish language and the Hispanic world.

Course schedule
Week 1 Lesson 7: Irregular verbs (decir and pensar).
Week 2 Lesson 7: Verb “doler”, stem-changing verbs (1).
Week 3 Lesson 8: Reflexive verbs (1), cardinal numbers.
Week 4 Lesson 8: Irregular verbs (salir、venir、empezar、venir).
Week 5 Lesson 9: Reflexive verbs (2), comparative and superlative.
Week 6 Lesson 9: stem-changing verbs (2), verb “costar”
Week 7 Lesson 10: Affirmative imperatives. Prepositional pronouns.
Week 8 Lesson 10: Negative imperative.
Week 9 Lesson 11: Preterit in past tense (regular form).
Week 10 Lesson 11: Preterit in past tense (irregular form)
Week 11 Lesson 12: Imperfect in past tense (regular form)
Week 12 Lesson 12: Imperfect in past tense (irregular form), cardinal number.
Week 13 Supplement (1): Present perfect, past particle, present particle.
Week 14 Supplement (2): Conditional tense, future tense.
Week 15 Wrap-up.
Final exam.
Prerequisites
It is desirable to take the classes of “Spanish II” and “Spanish for Intercultural Understanding” to acquire comprehensively the basic skill of the language.
Students are recommended to spend 45 minutes in preparing for each class, and another 45 minutes in completing assignments and revising the class.

Instructions on the references will be provided at the first class.
Assessment/Grading
Class participation will be assessed by active contribution to class activities (15%).
Mini quizzes will be given after finishing every two or three lessons to assess students’ communicative skill (15%).
In Final exam students must show that they have learned interactive skills based on proper understanding of the Hispanic culture that are required to learn through the course (70%).

Remarks 1
