Course description
The classcord is "eh35226".

Based on understanding of Electromagnetism, electromagnetic wave propagation, transmission line and light propagation in optical waveguide will be given for students who will work in the research and development related to light and radio wave in the future. Numerical analysis, example and some experimental demonstrations about the reflection, refraction, polarization of light, characteristic impedance will be given for better understanding for students who will work in various field.
Expected Learning
Able to understand the electromagnetic wave propagation in free space, and transmission line.


Course schedule
1st: Background of Electromagnetic Wave Engineering. Introduction of Vector potential.
2nd: Maxwell equations. Expression of electromagnetic wave in sinusoidal formula. Poynting vector.
3rd: Wave equation, and vector Helmholtz equation.
4th: Plane wave.
5th: Boundary condition.
6-7th.: Reflection, refraction and polarization of plane wave with numerical analysis.
8th.: Total reflection, Brewster angle, with numerical analysis.
9-10th.: Fundamental of transmission line. Skin effect. Difference of lumped parameter circuit and transmission line. Capacitance and inductance of coaxial cable, and parallel cable.
11th: Fundamental equation of transmission line.
12th.: Propagation constant/speed and characteristic impedance.
13th.: Reflection coefficient and Input impedance of transmission line.
14th.: Brief introduction of optical fibers.
15th: End term examination.
