Course description
This course gives a lecture on the social choice theory. The aim of this course is to let students deepen their understanding of how collective choices can be made on social issues, while considering the importance of democracy, individualism and social equality.
This course helps students enlarge their views on their specialty areas.
Expected Learning
Students can understand the logic of the paradox of voting.
Students can understand Arrow's general possibility theorem.
Students can understand Sen's liberal paradox.
Students can understand the basics of game theory.
Students can understand and deepen their thought of today's controversy about justice.
Students can understand Sen's basic capability theory and deepen their thought on social inequalities.

Prerequisites
This course is elective.
Students should make adequate preparations before each class spending the standard amount of time as specified by the university to achieve the credit as well as 30 hours of class attendance.
Students must attend at least two-thirds of all classes to get credit. If a student does not fully attend the class (i.e. is present for less than the full 90 minutes) on two occasions, it should be counted as one absence.

class participation (40%), quizzes (60%), final report (20%): Students' degrees of understanding of the logic of the paradox of voting, Arrow's general possibility theorem, Sen's liberal paradox, the basics of game theory, today's controversy about justice and Sen's basic capability theory and deepen their thought on social inequalities are evaluated.
