Course description
Heterocycles are important compounds widely found in the useful substances such as medicine drugs, agrochemicals and functional materials. Therefore, it is a clue leading to the development of novel useful materials to learn the chemical properties of the known heterocycles. In this course, the reactivities and synthetic methods of representative heterocycles were explained.
class code: v7maahc
In this course, lectures are given using Microsoft PowerPoint. In each lecture, handouts are distributed.
Expected Learning
1. To understand concepts, systematic classifications, names and structures of various heterocycles.
2. To understand chemical functions, reactivities and synthetic methods of electron-rich and electron-poor heterocycles.
3. To understand latest synthetic methods of heterocycles and to explain them.

Corresponding criteria in the Diploma Policy: See the Curriculum maps.
Course schedule
1st lecture: The general remarks (functions, classifications, organized naming) of the heterocycle compounds
2nd lecture: Chemical functions, reactivities and synthetic methods of 5-membered heterocycles, Part 1 (pyrroles, furans, thiophenes)
3rd lecture: Chemical functions, reactivities and synthetic methods of 5-membered heterocycles, Part 2 (azoles)
4th lecture: Chemical functions, reactivities and synthetic methods of 6-membered heterocycles
5th lecture: Chemical functions, reactivities and synthetic methods of benzene-fused 5-membered heterocycles
6th lecture: Chemical functions, reactivities and synthetic methods of benzene-fused 6-membered heterocycles
7th lecture: Chemical functions, reactivities and synthetic methods of other ring-fused heterocycles
8th lecture: Concepts and application of click chemistry
9th lecture: Progress of cyclic hypervalent iodine (Part 1)
10th lecture: Progress of cyclic hypervalent iodine (Part 2)
11-15th lectures: Investigation and presentation for latest synthetic methods of heterocycles.
Prerequisites
It is desirable for students to have already studied about organic chemistry in the department of chemistry.
Require preparation and review hours recommended by this university along with school hours (30 hours). Do preparation and review using textbooks and handouts.
Required Text(s) and Materials
Handouts are distributed as textbooks.

Assessment/Grading
Grades are given based 70% on the assignment and 30% on the presentation for latest synthetic methods of heterocycles.
Message from instructor(s)
Since this course supplies advanced contents of heterocycles, students should check the uncomprehended contents in basic organic chemistry.
Course keywords
