Course description
June, 7, 2022 (Tu) 10:00 - Face to Face
United graduate school bldg. 4F Conference room 2

The present course will provide the latest information on environmental microbiology. Especially, two subjects as follows are focused on,
(1) The basics of kinetic models used in bioremediation, and ecological constraints of bioremediation
(2) Structure and function of the microbial food web, and the basics of the grazing resistance strategy of bacteria.
Expected Learning
【Expected Learning】 (必須項目Required)英
Students attending the class are expected to,
① Understand basis of the techniques of environmental cleanup by using microorganisms.
② Understand roles of microbial food web on materials cycle in biosphere.
③ Acquire critical thinking for creation new technology by using microorganisms to work on environmental problems.
Course schedule
(1) Topics: ① basic mathematical (kinetic) model for bioremediation, ② relationship between growth of degrading microorganisms and degradation rate of target compounds, ③ concentration of target compounds as a limiting factor.
(2) Topics: ① basis of structure and function of microbial food web, ② relevance of microbial food web to materials cycle in biosphere, ③ mechanisms of grazing resistance strategy of bacteria.
Prerequisites
By using distributed materials, self-studies will be conducted before and after the lecture.
Required Text(s) and Materials
Materials distributed before the lecture

Message from instructor(s)
- Always seek a “questioning” attitude. Do not just listen to what I say or what textbooks say, but listen critically during the class.
- The possibilities of microbiology are infinitive. I hope to introduce you to microorganisms’ possibilities, thinking that there are many unknown microorganisms in the natural world. I would like you to keep asking questions during the lecture.
