Course description
Lectures and artists from an art university will give the lectures on how to face to artwork and instruct the basic techniques of artistic expression. Students can obtain the broaden knowledge of art which is essential for the global leaders and practically improve their abilities of observation, idea making, expression, and creativity.
Expected Learning
●Obtain the broaden knowledge on culture and art, and deepen the understanding of the diversity of expression and creativity of human beings.
●Practically learn the basic structure and techniques of artwork.
●Improve the abilities to observe, imagine, express, and create something new.
Course schedule
-The course will be consist of three intensive classes.
-One class is taught by German artists and two classes will be basically held in Japanese language.
-The topics and details below may be changed without notification.

This lecture course is held every two years and the following is schedule of this year (2023) .


■Class 1 "Productive Seeing. Exercise course in observation"

〇Contents:The ability to see is not a passive reception. It is an activity on physiological, neurological and imaginative levels. To carefully observe therefor can be trained. This training will help to analyse structures or materials for instance to identify potential flaws or mistakes. It also opens ways for innovative thinking as it stimulates imagination and spark new ideas. This training helps to think outside the box, find unconventional answers or solve wicked problems. The course will be divided into two steps. First there will be a theoretical introduction (Friedrich Weltzien) and secondly a practical exercise (Vanessa Karre). The exercise will consist of making ink blots and interpreting them. The challenge will be to translate these images made by chance into some mechanical device. As a result the students learned to practice observation skills, they will be able to develop their own creative strategy, they will find a deeper understanding of creativity as a tool of problem solving ? plus they might find a way to understand and use Art in relation to their own professional interests. The students are kindly asked to bring some paper (not to small, different qualities, e.g. printing paper, newspaper, tissue, sketch block…), ink (or any other colouring liquid like soy sauce, ketchup, coffee…), scissors and glue.

   
■Class 2“美術と社会〜画家フィンセント・ファン・ゴッホを事例に〜”
"Art and Society - An example of the Painter Vincent van Gogh"

○ Date & Time: 10:30 - 16:15 (Sat or Sun during May to June, Adjust due to student's schedule)
○ Leading Seminar Room, 2nd floor of BASE bldg. Koganei-campus
○ Outline:ファン・ゴッホの描いた内容、用いた素材や技法、残した言葉等を分析し、彼の芸術がどのような時代背景のもとに生み出されたのかを考える。また、没後の評価の変遷を知り、美術作品と社会の多様で密接な関わりを学ぶ。.
  
■Class 3 "Develop a design sense: Information Design"
○Lecturer: Joji Sugishita (Designer; Lecturer of Musashino Art University)
○Date & Time: 10:30 - 16:15 (Sat or Sun during May to June, Adjust due to student's schedule)
○Venue: LGP Seminar Room, 2nd floor of BASE bldg., Koganei-campus
○Outline: This class is composed of the lectures on idea creation and typography and exercise of poster design. Students cultivate observation ability, train the ?exible thinking, and develop the design sense which can be also applied for the design of products, packages, environment or any other materials or aspects related to their research.
